Work in social service settings is gratifying yet can impact our person in unhealthy ways. Current social climates often exacerbate existing tensions causing emotive professional situations to illicit feelings of isolation, detachment, and/or distrust. This dynamic can manifest not only in the service user/service relationship but also between colleagues. This session will apply the concept: personality disorder to profession contexts and explore the ways in which the concept can help of hinder progress towards shared goals. The session is suitable for all professional orientations and Learning Objectives can be meaningfully applied in all practice contexts.

Aims of the session:

To introduce and critically frame the diagnosis of personality disorder
To review common understandings associated with the diagnosis and their application
To link some of the core principles of personality disorder to everyday practice
To offer strategies for working through challenging professional relationships and situations

Objectives: Upon completion of this CPD briefing session delegates will have:

Developed a further understanding of the diagnostic label: personality disorder along with its core features and associated patterns
Gained an awareness of the potential everyday application of ‘personality disorder’ as conceptual tool
Be able to apply aspects of ‘personality disorder’ to their everyday work
Begun to understand the implications (positive and negative) of deploying clinical concepts in practice

Mark Wheeler is the Acting Head of Social Work at the University of East London. Mark has experience of holding workshops (Mental Health) for the BA and MA Social Work courses and local authority stakeholders. Professional social work experience has been acquired through practice in a variety of contexts including the voluntary, non-profit, private, and statutory sectors in the United States and the UK.
